Speech is free unless it's critical
In New Mexico, a high school teacher has been fired for allowing one of his students to write and then read out loud a poem critical of the War in Iraq and Bush's underfunding of No Child Left Behind. There was no profanity in the poem, yet the principal fired the teacher for not censoring it, raised a flag with the school's military liaison, and shouted to the students who don't agree with him that they should, "Shut your faces!"… Ugh.
The offending poem is here. And no, it's not very good. But it's definitely not obscene.
