 The Meaning of Liff
Between Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books, Douglas Adams wrote two books about the Meaning of Liff; he took a bunch of funny British town names and turned them into definitions for things that there should be words for, but unaccountably, weren't. Searching for the book was like the quest for the Holy Grail: it's now available online.
Reading this makes you realize how bloody brilliant Douglas Adams was.
