Middle East/ Terrorism experience helpful but not mandatory
When asked whether he, as the FBI's former counterterrorism chief, could describe the differences between Shiite and Sunni Muslims, Watson answered, "Not technically, no."

The headline is "FBI failed to hire experts", but the article is mostly about how we don't need them.
. . . . my newest right wing conspiracy theory goes like this: they do and say things like this so when folks try to protest or even talk about it, we'll just sound REALLY crazy . . . "for real, mom- I read it on the internet!"

Heather Havirlesky is a t.v. critic for If I could figure out how to link through the commercial ad you have to watch if you're not willing to pay for Salon, I would link most of her columns.
Here's an interview with her. I think she's awfully amusing.

I love blackhawks but you know who hates them ?
Last week's "This American Life" I can't recommend it enough.
*A story about a comedian who tells jokes that are only funny to soldiers in Iraq.
*Exerpts from a documentary that follows Arkansas National Guard guys . . one of my favorite lines "turn those cell phones off!"
*A telephone interview from a guy who was in faluja
who talks about music the US blasts through speakers to make Iraqis crazy and stuff the Iraqis blast to make the American soldiers crazy.
. . . speaks of care packages and crayon drawings from school children. (Another favorite line "artichoke hearts! I love those!")
Stories from people who are experiencing it- the way Ira Glass et al. do it. So worth an hour on a sat. afternoon.

what's wrong with a little synergy?
Highlights include:
  • The word "synergy" is used by Gn. Miller (guy who came up w. some creative ideas in Guatanamo) in a written report- around Sept. of 03 re: Iraq Military intelligence/ Detainee care takers- "atmosphere", etc.

  • Where that figure 60% comes from (percentage of detainees believed to present no threat to the coalition)

  • "ghost detainees": folks brought in by OGA (that's other gov. agencies). . . see read it and you too can learn the lingo.
No one knows what they were charged with or why or by whom - but when the red cross came to visit they were hidden (actually moved around the prison) - to avoid discovery.

  • If it helps, at the end of the report there are names of people listed - including a military dog handler who get commendation for refusing to take part in this stuff.
Read this and then watch TV reports about it- and then wonder if the people talking (or the people running this war) have read it or not.

Stuff I didn't know about Jesse Jackson
I saw this headline "Jackson asked to help free U.S. captives" and I thought "Michael"?
Remember when Jesse freed those Spy plane hostages in China? I thought that was weird (and china just went with it to embarrass the racist U.S.), but I didn't bother to find out more. Apparently he's been mediating hostage releases for a while (gulf war I / Kosovo). I feel kind of bad, cause I always thought of him as a sort of ineffectual joke.
    more background history from CNN
oops- update, got it wrong about China- J.J. wanted to go over-but wasn't allowed. The rest seems to be right.

     Halliburton on Mars
Steve Streich, a veteran Halliburton scientific adviser, was among the authors of an article in Oil & Gas Journal in 2000 titled "Drilling Technology for Mars Research Useful for Oil, Gas Industries."

". . . an unprecedented opportunity for both investigating the possibility of life on Mars and for improving our abilities to support oil and gas demands on Earth".

"In other words, NASA would pay Halliburton and other firms billions of dollars to perform research and development on Mars-bound technologies that they would use for profitable exploration on this planet. No doubt those scientific advances would be useful here long before anybody lands on Mars."- from Joe Conason's journal at

"this ideology makes us the cliches we adamantly reject"
"This generation . . . created a new definition of "smart." Intelligence lies in one’s ability to spin pop-culture references in order to show how others have fallen prey to the media and are stupid."

notice, I'm not saying any of this . . . I'd especially never use the term "Gen X" (note the quotation marks)
