(a Four Part Series brought to you by the State Emblem of Utah -a Beehive)
After Vegas, we headed to Escalante, Utah. We checked into the Escalante Bed and Breakfast. It's real cute. It's nice because it has a main house and then a separate building in back that houses the rooms. Escalante is a small town of about 800 people. We only ever saw about 8 of them.
In Utah we visited Bryce Canyon National Park with its famed "hoo doos" which are spiral rock formations. They're this rust red and orange color and are really beautiful. More hoo doos were found at a place called Devil's Garden which was located down a washboard road. We traveled about 50 miles on this road and when we got back to pavement our car was making funny rattling noises. I think we broke something.
We also went to a petrified rock forest, which sounds really boring but is in fact ultra cool. These old trees have actually fossilized into rainbow colored rock. There's a big huge geological explanation for it - I will not be going into it at this time. I wanted to steal a piece but a little display at the trailhead told of the bad luck that can befall a person who takes some of the rock home. They hung up letters that people sent to the park office telling of the misery they encountered when they took rock out of the park and most of them sent the piece of rock back in the letter.
Finally, we got to see some Hopi Indian ruins on a high cliff and we saw a pictograph through our binoculars. It is called the One-Hundred-Hands panel and is literally 100 Hopi handprints. It is supposedly 800 years old.
