Sorry to leave you hanging on the final installment of my vacation. I lost track of my mind for a few days.
One of the neatest parts of our trip was a stop at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Bright Angel Canyon, Utah. This organization, found at www.bestfriends.org, is all about the animals. They own 3000 acres and house 1500 animals that have been rescued from homes or shelters. Many animals are up for adoption but many cannot be placed in homes due to illness, temperament or old age. They get to live out the rest of their little animal lives in nicely appointed buildings. The dogs even have heated floors, for crying outloud. They have cats, dawgs, horses, birds, rabbits, and various wildlife as well.
Since my dog is adopted and she had a rough life before she came to live at "club Terwilliger" I have a soft spot for little adoptable animals. I almost loaded up our car with dawgs since I loved all of them so much. I spent much of our tour in tears.
They have full-time employees but many people also volunteer. Some people spend their vacations there. The town it's in is beautiful and the whole aura of the place is lovely.
One downer (isn't there always a downer with me?) is that later on in the day we drove through part of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona and the poverty was - I don't have a word for it. Not only were some of the homes lacking glass for their windows and lacking indoor plumbing, they were miles and miles away from any discernable town, grocery store, school or place of employment. It made me feel a little sheepish that kitties were living in multi-million dollar cat condos only 150 miles away and InStyle magazine is holding million dollar benefits for homeless rabbits.
