Learning to Fall: that was.
Just like that, Dad and Ms. Harriet came bustin' through the back door laughin' their heads off. Ms. Harriet had her hand on Dad's shoulder and I saw my Dad's big hand with the huge college football ring on his pinky finger move from Ms. Harriet's back to her side and I wondered why he would be holdin' her the exact way he held Momma.

"What's this?" Dad asked Momma and David, but I got the feeling from how quick he went from laughing to serious that he was askin' David more than Momma.

"Your wife just asked a question is all and I answered her truthfully." David didn't back down and that's sayin' somethin' 'cause Dad's a big man, or a beeg damn man as Mr. Gill says it.

"You were holding her hand on your chest." Dad was angry all of a sudden and the room--even the birds outside--got real quiet.

"That was not what it may have looked like, Philetus Sherman, now hush up." Momma lit another cigarette and stepped back from David, who was practically all up in her, he was that close.
