Mornings Here

Down here, beneath the wind,
There's a calm as we learn how to live
All over again.

Should a car drive away from us
Into the west, into its own shadow,
A cloud of dust would rise
High above us like a snapped bedsheet
Canopy cloud that arcs over us -

We feel that leaving a long time -

Falls, louder than you'd imagine,
Like first rain, mice in the piano,
Coats our plants, our hair, our cars.

Our windows cake with it,
That and the pinkish wave of a new day.
