my first job out of college was with a company that made golf shirts. i worked in the art department of their embroidery section. i was a "colorist". for $18k a year i would take a company's logo and match the colors of the embroidery to the shirt. i wish i was making this up but i'm not. i had this whole little book of thread colors much like paint sample cards. i would spend 8 hours a day picking out colors. some of the companies- most were country clubs - would have specific colors that i HAD to use. some wanted them subtle and in different tones. "tone-on-tone" was a frequent request meaning i would take a red shirt and do a lighter red thread or what have you.
one time i had to do some sample shirts for "kenny rogers' cut-n-putt". this was a venture kenny rogers was thinking of embarking on. a golf course where you could also cut a record. wow - now i REALLY wish i was making this up. he wanted orange shirts and the logo was a gold guitar with some golf clubs with it. no matter how you looked at it, it just wasn't pretty.
i didn't work there very long before moving to nyc. i figured i could be a hot dog vender if i had to.
