If, in response to that anecdote, you end a sentence with, "...I just hate faggots," you don't get to start that sentence with "I'm not homophobic..."
The two men who taught me this, by negative example, seemed conflicted with making sure they weren't viewed as homophobic, while being as virulently homophobic as possible.
