We spent two days on the runway, waiting for our mission. We were so close to the airfield, that every time a plane took off, we had to hold down our gear so it didn't get blown away. There were probably over a thousand people living here. By the end of the first day, the meager facilities that were provided had been overwhelmed, and we were running out of water. For us, the Infantryman, this wasn't a problem. We are used to these kinds of conditions. Most of us had extra water and food squirreled away. The other guys, like the band and the maintenance guys, were not as well prepared or well suited to this environment.
