Post-Modern Drunk: You Hate My Freedom Random Ten (2/24/06) In case you've forgotten, here's how it goes. I put the iPod on shuffle, listen to the next ten songs, and then pretend you care about what I have to say about them. Simple, elegant, entirely conceited.
"Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel, from In Good Company Soundtrack 10/10 - Goodbye Indie Rock cred. Hello awesome song.
"Gagging Order" by Radiohead, from Com Lag: 2plus2isfive 9/10 - A quiet atypical Radiohead song, surprisingly sweet and touching.
"Baltimore" by The Extra Glenns, from Martial Arts Weekend 8/10 - From a side project of John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), comes, well, basically John Darnielle, with more piano. "In Baltimore you will find what you've been waiting for." This reminds me of that time I went to Baltimore and found what I'd been waiting for. That's so true.
"Suddenly There Is A Tidal Wave" by The Magnetic Fields, from The Wayward Bus 5/10 - It doesn't really count as the Magnetic Fields, to me, since on this album Stephin Merritt doesn't really sing at all. I don't think I've bothered to listen to this song all the way through ever before today.
"Ana Ng" by They Might Be Giants, from Lincoln 8/10 - "I don't want the world. I just want your half."
"Head On" by The Pixies, from Trompe Le Monde 10/10 - One of the best Pixies songs ever, and one of the best covers of an already good song. There can be no dispute on this.
"Desolation Row" by Bob Dylan, from Highway 61 Revisited 10/10 - Sure, it's four hours long. But it's four hours of some of Dylan's best work, both lyrically and musically.
"So Cruel" by U2, from Achtung Baby 5/10 - I remember loving this album. I also remember listening to New Kids on the Block, so my taste is not entirely to be trusted.
"Rainfall" by Apples in Stereo, from Velocity of Sound 10/10 - The iPod loves Apples in Stereo, and so do I--this is my favorite of theirs.
"Low Desert Punk" by Brant Bjork and the Operators, from Jalamanta 7/10 - Sure, it sounds a lot like Ocean Colour Scene's "Hundered Mile High City," with an American accent. But is that really so wrong?
8.2/10 - There wer some stinkers there, but damn if this wasn't one of the best Random Tens I've had in a long time.
