The street that T's into mine is lined with 80 ft tall Cook Pines There are about fifteen in all. Starting today and ending tomorrow all of these trees will be cut down. It is the result of a local tragedy. One of these trees fell in the middle of the night and crushed a little girl in her bed. She's still in critical condition. I ride by her house every day on my way to work.
I know it is the right thing for the city to do, but it doesn't mean that I will not miss these trees. I've known them for 10 years. So I'm raising a toast to the trees... For the sap that smells good when I toss it into the charcoal grill, for the bit of coolness and shade on those afternoon uphill runs...for the many posts for my dog to dart between. To parenchyma cells! To the carbon cycle! To monocots and dicots! To the trees!
