Klutch.xls: Naive words of a washed up punk rocker

I am always a good year or two behind the underground. I am not a hipster. Though, I am not a bandwaggoner. I catch the trend just before it "blows up" but never quite have the satisfaction of having discovered something.

Today, our topic of discussion, kids, is "Antifolk."

Here's the story.

Daniel Johnston is playing Boston next week. I love Daniel Johnston. Daniel Johnston is like the first blanket I had as a baby and carried around with me almost into my pre-teen years. Daniel Johnston is like the thumb I sucked until I was 4 or 5. When I found out Daniel Johnston was playing, I quoted the maestro himself and exclaimed "Yipee!"

Daniel Johnston is my one link to hip. I was listening to Daniel Johnston well before Kurt Cobain wore the "Hi! How are you?" shirt on MTV.

So, as I always do before a show, I did some research on the opening act.

Kimya Dawson.

Have you New York hipsters heard of her? Her web-site then turned me on to a genre of music coming out of the Big Apple called "Anti Folk." Ex-punk-rockers playing ironic pseudo folk music. This is right up my frigging alley.

Anyway, please flood my comment board or e-mail me at lazyeyetom@juno.com with what you can tell me about this "scene" man.

As usual, I'm probably just getting up to speed while everyone else is moving on to the next hip underground thing. But if you have a chance, keep your eyes out for Daniel Johnston, he may be coming to a theatre near you . . .
