Smackdown!

in case you don't know, i signed my life over full time to the big corporation thus ending my long and illustrious carreer as the most fabulous temp slut that ever walked 51st Street. there i said it. if you care to continue to read the words of a souless storm trooper marching her way to follow the orders of The Man every morning, good. if not, i completely understand.

yesterday they called me over to HR to fill out the appropriate paperwork.

a young guyanese man with an intense picture of himself with his shirt half unbuttoned in front of the twin towers (distracting on more than one level) asked me questions. mostly the kind that have numerical answers. so we're going along it's all fairly predictable.

and then he says:

what ethnicity are you? white, african american, american indian, hispanic or N/A?

those are my choices? i replied

he said nothing.

i am mixed. don't you have a multi-racial category?

no. he said dryly, what are you?

(okay, so that's an illegal question, but we'll let that go for now)

i'm hispanic and white (jewish i said quietly to myself cuz i've never ever felt real white)

well, said my ethnically ambiguous interviewer, you are going to have to pick one.

Jesus, I thought to myself. it's like being back in elementary school. except they always pick you for the team (or not). you don't get to pick. I guess I could pick N/A, but the problem is they are too applicable to me.

well i don't really know what to say. I'm not just any one of those.

he sighs like he doesn't have time for my personal identity issues.

just pick - he says - it doesn't matter.
