While wandering around in the rain today I saw "Heroin Harry" meandering down Broadway, I think he works near me. You see at my last job there were two Harry's: first there was "Sleepy Harry". Nice enough guy but he was always falling asleep at his desk. I'm not sure what he was up to after hours to leave him so tuckered out all day, but there you go. He drove a motorcycle, Sleepy Harry did, which prompted me to dub him "Sleepy Knievel". Anyway, back to the other guy. This other Harry was a temp at a time when I was also a temp, a long time ago friends. Harry didn't have a phone so he asked me once if he could use mine, I said yes and he never asked again. He used my goddamned phone everday. If we had a 15 minute break he would be on my phone and usually ten minutes before lunch he would come over and use my phone. I started listening to his phone conversations, things like "Meet me at 6th and 18th" and "Don't be late this time" and "Are you going to be there". After lunch was really interesting, he would disappear in the men's room for a while and come back on a serious nod. I am not making this up, one afternoon I walked past his desk and his eyes were rolling back and his head was lolling about like it was full of helium. It didn't take long to put the pieces together and realize he was using. It started as some of us joking and saying that we thought the kid was shooting up in the men's room. To this day I am 99% sure that was indeed the case. Anyway, they eventually let Harry go, they had no choice. Like my old man once said, if you're gonna work for the man then there's no time to dance with the white lady. I think he hit the nail on the head with that one. Anyway they replaced Harry with a guy who became a pretty good friend of mine, so I suppose I should thank him for that. The other Harry pretty much slept through the whole thing.
