2001:June:8

My best friend Tony had a birthday back in February, I gave him his present last weekend. It's not that I'm a negligent friend; it's just that he lives in Rhode Island and I live in New York and am apparently too lazy to go to the post office. Anyway I bought him a sealed vinyl copy of "The Freewheeling Bob Dylan", which is a fine album and boasts what in our opinion is the best album cover of all time. I'm sure you're familiar with it: Bob and a lovely young woman happily strolling down West 4th St. If I could describe their appearance in a word it would be "freewheeling". Not only is it our favorite album cover but also we both agree that it if our lives had to be like an album cover that is the one we would both want to live. It really captures a moment in time so perfectly, the fleeting happiness of youth, those isolated moments of idyllic splendor that most of us can only dream about or conjures up in the bottom of a bottle. I often times like to think of myself as the "freewheeling John Lawton" but never in all my idyllic moments, and I've had a half dozen or so, have I reached Dylan status. Needless to say Tony was thrilled. You see, he and his wife own a house in Rhode Island and above their garage is a room, which we call the Rock And Roll Room and it is a real charmer. A classic Van Halen poster displayed at a jaunty angle adorns one wall. An autographed Jonathan Richman single (courtesy of yours truly) hangs to the left of that. When he first described the house to me I thought he was talking about an apartment above the garage and I was immediately excited. The prospect of frittering away my years living in a Fonzie apartment and cleaning my friends pool didn't sound all that bad to me. But I suppose I have to go forge my own path. I'm sure if I hang out on West4th St long enough I'll have my own freewheeling moment.
