subway music
by Pat
I haven't been taking the subway lately. Instead I walk a whole lot. I've found that the $15 a week makes a bigger difference than you might think.
Anyway, the other day my feet hurt from wearing new boots, so I decided to take the train home from work. You know how sometimes you can see half a dozen different kinds of music on one commute - well this time, they were all playing together.
There was an asian woman playing that weird stringed guitar looking thing that always sounds like it's crying, there was a guy playing the kettle drum, there was a young white kid playing an acoustic guitar (he was super excited about this "jam" he was involved in), another kid playing a bucket, and an old guy(who I call "the old blues man") playing an out of tune banjo.
It was a beautiful mix of race and culture...but they sounded TERRIBLE. There's a reason these people are playing thier instruments alone in the subway - nobody wants them in thier band!
